Located in the historical town of Kannauj, widely celebrated as the Perfume Capital of India, Kannauj Attar stands as a pioneering house—often recognized as the very first commercial attar-maker led by legend perfumer families rooted in generations of aromatic heritage. Its legacy traces back centuries, with origins woven deeply into the city’s centuries-old tradition of fragrance alchemy.

🕰️ A Heritage Stretching Over 400 Years

Kannauj’s fragrance story began over a millennium ago—flourishing through the reign of Emperor Harshavardhana in the 7th century and later finding royal patronage under the Mughals, especially Jahangir and Noor Jahan, who elevated rose attars and perfumery to art. Historically, Kannauj distilleries used the labor-intensive deg‑bhapka method—a seal-clay copper still distillation technique—that predates the famed perfumeries of Grasse, France.

Our founder families were among the earliest to formalize and commercialize this art—building a business deeply rooted in these traditional practices while earning trust across royal courts, pilgrimage markets, and international trade routes.

🌱 Crafted with Tradition in Kannauj, Delivered with Integrity

  • Artisan Apothecary: Each attar is distilled in handcrafted copper stills (‘deg’) over wood or cow‑dung fires. Vapors pass through bamboo pipes into condenser pots (‘bhapka’) submerged in cooling water—allowing fragrant steam to infuse into pure sandalwood oil and form authentic attar.

  • Floral, Earth, and Resin Collections: From rose, jasmine, mogra, and parijat attars to the iconic Mitti attar (monsoon earth), sandalwood based traditional indian attars, and floral‑herbaceous Shamama blends (over 40 botanicals combined and aged)—each aroma is a story of place, seasons, and skilled perfumers.

🌍 Preservation Through Innovation

  • GI-Tag Recognition: In 2014, Kannauj Perfume received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, legally acknowledging its unique cultural and artisanal value.

  • Modern Presentation: While tradition is preserved in every fragrance, product aesthetics, packaging, and global shipping reflect contemporary standards. This ensures attars are both heritage-rich and globally accessible Elle India.

  • Eco-Friendly Craft: The process is entirely alcohol-free, using steam distillation without electricity. Sandalwood oil acts as a natural fixative for volatile flower and herb essences.

👐 Trust Built Through Generations

  • Lineage of Legend Perfumers: For generations, our perfumer families have cultivated the craft—from apprentice to master. Many are 6th, 7th, or even 30th generation attar-makers, preserving trade secrets, formulas, and techniques merely passed down, never published.

  • A City Reliant on the Trade: In Kannauj, nearly every other house is tied to attar—from clay-pot makers to export vendors. Around 700 distilleries once existed; even today, hundreds continue making attar-based products for domestic and global markets.

  • Global Footprint, Local Roots: Our attars reach markets in the Middle East, Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia, staying true to Indian craftsmanship while meeting the highest quality standards.

🎨 Our Philosophy: Tradition, Purity & Emotion

We believe in capturing memories—like the smell of rain on earth, the softness of jasmine at dawn, the seduction of saffron and oud—all distilled into oil without alcohol or additives. Our attars convey heritage, emotion, and identity, not trends.

Every purchase supports:

  • Living Tradition: Backing families who continue age-old craft in an era of mass industrial fragrances.

  • Sustainable Craftsmanship: Maintaining natural, resource-conscious methods across flower, herb, and resin sourcing.

  • Cultural Legacy: Upholding a tradition that predates modern Indian borders, Mughal courts, and European perfumeries alike.

✨ At Kannauj Attar, we are not just perfumers—we are custodians of olfactory legacy.
